Resume Tips
Tip #1 - Your resume is a marketing piece, not an autobiography. It should contain only relevant and well selected information.
Tip #2 - You should have a well-crafted summary at the top of your resume which allows you to start shaping the reader’s impression of you.
Tip #3 - Rewrite and refine your summary until it is crisp and clear. It should only be a few sentences in length, no more than 4 or 5 at most.
Tip #4 - Don’t start descriptions of your work experience with words like “Responsibilities included…” or “Duties included…”. These are filler words and take up valuable air time without providing real substance. It’s better to start directly with whatever follows those words.
Tip #5 - The length of your resume will depend on your level of experience and the type of employers you seek. Two pages are fine for most experienced professionals in business. One page works for less experienced people. For academic and medical posts, you will likely need an extensive curriculum vitae, similar to a resume. It is expected that these will be longer, often several pages in length.
Tip #6 - Be brutally clear in your resume. Take out all non-essential words and phrases. Don’t clutter your resume with unnecessary words, making it harder to read, understand and act upon.
